History
Paimpol was the main French port for the Iceland cod schooner fleet from the 1850s to the First World War. Up to 80 Islandais schooners sailed from here each February and returned in August or September, a campaign described by Pierre Loti in Pêcheur d'Islande, published in 1886.
Story
The Chant des Marins festival, held in Paimpol every two years since 1989, gathers around 150 sea shanty groups from more than 30 countries and draws over 100 000 visitors over a weekend in August.
