Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter from the Golfe de Fos through the Saint-Louis sea lock, which links the Mediterranean to the Rhône via the canal Saint-Louis. The lock takes plaisance with commercial traffic; call the capitainerie before arrival. From the canal, the Pôle basins are on the south bank, immediately west of the town.
Practical
Six wet pontoons and two dry yards, combined capacity up to around 4,400 boats. Fuel berth with diesel and unleaded, open 24/7 by card. On site: travelift, boatyard, sailmaker, electronics, chandlery, and about 35 nautical businesses. Town centre and supermarket within 1 km.
Ashore
Tour Saint-Louis, a 1738 Vauban style harbour tower, in the town centre at 1 km. Plage Napoléon, long Rhône delta beach, 5 km SE by road. Parc naturel régional de Camargue begins immediately west of the town, birdwatching from the Mas-Thibert or Salin-de-Giraud routes.
History
Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône was created in 1863 around the new canal and lock built to bypass the silting Rhône mouth. The town grew as a commercial outport of Arles and turned to plaisance and catamaran refit from the 1990s as container traffic moved to Fos-sur-Mer.
