Approach and anchoring

Navigation on the tidal Garonne requires planning with the tide, since the current reaches 3 to 4 knots on the ebb and the mascaret tidal bore can form on spring tides. Pass under the Pont d'Aquitaine suspension bridge, air draught 53 metres. The Pont Chaban-Delmas lift bridge downstream of the city centre opens on request for masts above 16 metres.

Practical

Anchor on mud, good holding. Swing with the tide reversal. The Halte Nautique de Lormont Bas lies 0.2 nautical miles east with visitor berths. Bordeaux city quays at the Cité du Vin are 1.1 miles to the south.

Ashore

Cité du Vin wine museum on the left bank, served by Bordeaux tram line B at Stalingrad or Cité du Vin stops. Parc de l'Ermitage Sainte-Catherine on the Lormont heights. Bordeaux old town, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007 as Port of the Moon.

History

Lormont was a shipbuilding centre for the Bordeaux wine trade and a royal naval yard under Louis XIV. The Pont d'Aquitaine opened in 1967 as one of the longest suspension bridges in France at the time.
