Anchorage off Peanut Island in Lake Worth at Riviera Beach, Florida, sand bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Peanut Island sits at the junction of Lake Worth Inlet and the ICW. Anchor off the eastern and southern sides on sand, which gives shelter from E to S. Depths around the island run 2 to 6 feet and shift with the sandbars and tide, so sound your way in and watch the tidal range.
Practical
Riviera Beach Municipal Marina is 0.2 mile to the south-west and Safe Harbor New Port Cove 0.2 mile to the north. The island is an 80-acre public park with picnic shelters, restrooms, and a dredged basin on the north-west side for dinghy tie-up.
Ashore
Peanut Island is a public park with swimming areas, a snorkelling lagoon and a perimeter trail. The Kennedy Bunker, a fallout shelter built in 1961 for President Kennedy, stands on the island, though it is currently closed for restoration.
History
Peanut Island was formed in 1918 from material dredged when the Lake Worth Inlet was cut. It grew from about 10 acres to roughly 80 acres through later maintenance dredging of the inlet and the ICW.
