Approach and anchoring
Reached by the Canal de l'Oise à l'Aisne, between the Braye-en-Laonnois tunnel to the east and the locks of Pargny. No tidal effect, current negligible. Speed limit 6 km/h. Grass banks with mooring rings.
Practical
Short quay for two to three boats. Water point, no electricity. No fuel. Small grocery and bakery at Filain village, 1 km up the hill. Full provisioning in Laon, 15 km north.
Ashore
The Chemin des Dames ridge, a major First World War battlefield, runs along the plateau 2 km north of the canal. The Caverne du Dragon museum, dedicated to the 1917 Nivelle offensive, is 8 km by road. The medieval hilltop town of Laon with its 12th century cathedral sits 15 km to the north.
History
The Canal de l'Oise à l'Aisne was opened in 1890 to link the coalfields of the north with the Aisne valley. The Braye-en-Laonnois tunnel just east of Pargny is 2 365 m long and passes under the Chemin des Dames plateau.
