Approach and anchoring
Reached via the Canal de l'Oise à l'Aisne, Freycinet gauge, 38.5 m by 5.05 m maximum. The canal includes the Braye-en-Laonnois tunnel, 2365 m long, with alternating one-way traffic on schedule. VNF operates the locks.
Practical
Pontoon with a few berths alongside. Water point. No fuel on site. Bakery and a small grocery within the village, within 500 m.
Ashore
Chemin des Dames ridge lies 4 km south, with the Caverne du Dragon museum on the 1917 French offensive. Abbey of Vauclair ruins, a 12th century Cistercian foundation, 6 km east. Laon cathedral 18 km north-east.
History
The Canal de l'Oise à l'Aisne was opened in 1890 to link the two rivers across the Chemin des Dames plateau. Pinon sits on the southern edge of a landscape shaped by the fighting of 1917 and 1918.
