Orleans Marina
- Type
- Harbour
Marina in the West End district of New Orleans, on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, with over 400 berths.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from Lake Pontchartrain through the New Basin Canal entrance, marked by lateral buoys. The marina monitors VHF 16. Transient berths come in 40 ft and 75 ft sizes. The West End basin is shared with the New Orleans Municipal Yacht Harbor and two yacht clubs immediately to the north.
Practical
Fresh water and shore power on the pontoons. A fuel berth sits at the New Basin Canal entrance. Most permanent berths carry a waiting list, while transient berths stay available. Downtown New Orleans is around 8 km from the basin.
History
West End was built on land reclaimed from Lake Pontchartrain in the 1830s and grew into one of the oldest recreational boating districts in the region. Orleans Marina lost only a few boats during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, unlike harbours nearby.
