Approach and anchoring
Approached from the south between Ram Island Shoal and Morgan Point. Holding is on mud. Sheltered from NW, W and NE winds. The mooring ground off Noank is open water with little wind protection. Maxwell Boatyard lies 0.5 miles W and Ram Island Yacht Club 0.5 miles NW.
Ashore
Noank is a working lobstering and oyster village whose historic district was listed on the National Register in 1979. The Connecticut State Lobster Hatchery was set up here around 1912. Ford's Lobsters, on the waterfront, appeared in the 1988 film Mystic Pizza.
History
The name comes from the Pequot word Nauyang, meaning point of land. The Noank Shipyard was the largest builder of wooden ships in the United States in the mid to late 1800s, and the fishing sloop type known as the Noank smack originated in the village.
