Approach and anchoring
Enter the harbour from the Fort Adams side. Two federal anchorages lie north and west of Goat Island, with the city anchorage marked at the south end of the harbour. Hail the Newport Harbormaster on VHF 16 for mooring availability; Oldport Marine works VHF 68. Bottom is rocky.
Practical
Fresh water is available. Transient moorings are first come, first served from public and private operators. Goat Island Marina, 0.3 mile south, has 275 berths and 125 moorings with shore power, water and pump-out. Navy Sailing Center lies about 0.5 mile north.
Ashore
Newport's Thames Street waterfront, with shops, restaurants and the historic district, is a short tender run from the moorings. The colonial town centre and the Gilded Age mansions along Bellevue Avenue are all reached on foot from the landings.
