Approach and anchoring
Enter Newport Harbour past Fort Adams to the south, then steer for the inner harbour between Goat Island and the city waterfront. Wide floating wood pontoons take alongside dockage, with the largest berth handling vessels up to 300 ft LOA and 18 ft draught. VHF 9.
Practical
Around 60 transient berths. Shore power at 30, 50 and 100 amps with three-phase service. Fresh water, fuel and pump-out at the berth, wifi, heads, showers and laundry on site. The 133-room hotel includes a waterfront restaurant and bar with live music in season.
Ashore
Bowen's Wharf and Bannister's Wharf shops and seafood restaurants at 100 m. Thames Street runs the length of the old waterfront. The Cliff Walk trailhead, a 5.6 km coastal path along the gilded age mansions, starts at Memorial Boulevard, 1.6 km east.
History
Newport hosted twelve America's Cup defences between 1930 and 1983, all but the first three sailed in 12 Metre yachts. In 1983 Australia II beat Liberty here, ending the New York Yacht Club's 132-year hold on the trophy. The marina is home to the largest fleet of restored 12 Metres in the world.
