Approach and anchoring

The anchorage lies off downtown New Bern at mile 185 of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The mud bottom gives reliable holding. Shelter runs from NW through E to SW; the broad lower Neuse leaves the anchorage open to wind across the water.

Practical

Galley Stores and Marina is 0.5 nm to the NW, with diesel, petrol, water, shore power and showers, and 25 transient slips for boats up to 100 feet. New Bern Grand Marina lies 0.6 nm to the W. The Galley Stores provisioning market sits on the waterfront.

Ashore

Historic downtown New Bern is a short walk from the dock. Tryon Palace, reconstructed on the foundations of the 1770 colonial governor's house, rises from the Trent River bank at the foot of George Street.

History

New Bern was North Carolina's colonial capital. Tryon Palace, built for royal governor William Tryon and completed in 1770, was reconstructed in the mid-20th century, which involved removing 54 buildings and rerouting US Highway 70.
