Small drying harbour on the south coast of Île-de-Batz, Finistère, in the Canal de l'Île-de-Batz opposite Roscoff.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter through the Canal de l'Île-de-Batz, buoyed channel between the island and the mainland, strong tidal streams up to 4 knots at springs. The harbour dries at low water. Passenger ferries from Roscoff use the adjacent pier, keep clear of their manoeuvres.
Practical
One visitor berth on the quay, mostly used by island fishing boats. Shops, bakery and a few restaurants in the village a short walk from the quay. Water available on the pier.
Ashore
Jardin Georges Delaselle at the east end of the island, 2 km from the harbour, exotic garden founded in 1897 with over 2500 plant species. Coastal footpath right round the island, roughly 10 km total. Plage de Porz Leien sand beach 500 m west.
History
Île-de-Batz has been inhabited since the Neolithic and hosted an early medieval monastic settlement linked to Saint Pol Aurélien, one of the seven founding saints of Brittany, in the 6th century.
