Approach and anchoring
The Matanzas River is a narrow estuary along the ICW, sheltered from the Atlantic by Anastasia Island. Tidal current runs hard, so anchor with regard to the stream rather than the wind. The Bridge of Lions opens on a Coast Guard schedule for masted vessels. Holding is on mud, sheltered from west through south to south-east.
Practical
Fresh water is available. The St Augustine Municipal Marina lies 0.5 miles south with a dinghy dock and three mooring fields. Anchoring is not permitted within 100 feet of the marked mooring field boundary. Hidden Harbor Marina is 1 mile to the south-west.
Ashore
Downtown St Augustine is within walking distance of the marina landing. The Castillo de San Marcos, a stone fort completed in 1695, stands on the waterfront. Restaurants, provisions and the old town streets are all reachable on foot.
