Guide

Approach and anchoring

The moorings lie along the seawall on both sides of the Bridge of Lions, San Marco field to the north and Menendez field to the south. Tidal current runs strongly through the bay. Call St. Augustine Municipal Marina on VHF 71 for a buoy assignment.

Practical

Buoys are managed by the municipal marina, with fresh water and a dinghy dock ashore. The marina has showers, laundry and pump-out. A breakwater dock north of the basin gives added shelter from north and north-east winds.

Ashore

The dinghy dock lands at the marina in the historic district. Castillo de San Marcos, the seventeenth-century Spanish stone fort, is a 10 minute walk north along the waterfront. St. George Street, the pedestrian core, runs through the old town with shops and restaurants.

History

St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565 and is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the continental United States. Matanzas, Spanish for slaughters, recalls the killing of French Huguenot soldiers near the inlet that same year.
