Approach and anchoring

Access via the Oise, navigable section of the Seine-Nord freight route. Maximum draught 2 m at this quay. Watch for commercial barges up to Grand Gabarit size on the main channel and keep to the mooring side. No tidal constraint; current rises after heavy rainfall on the upper Oise.

Practical

Quay mooring with rings beside the road bridge. No fuel berth. Bakery, tabac and small food shops in Villers-sous-Saint-Leu at 500 m. Larger supermarket in Saint-Leu-d'Esserent at 2 km across the bridge.

Ashore

Abbey church of Saint-Leu-d'Esserent, 11th to 13th century Cluniac priory listed Monument historique, on the hill 1.5 km away. Forêt de Chantilly and the château at 8 km south. GR 655 and the Avenue Verte London-Paris pass through the village.

History

Saint-Leu-d'Esserent was the main quarry for the white limestone used in the cathedrals of Senlis, Beauvais and in the Louvre's 17th-century facades, shipped downstream on the Oise. The underground quarries were used by the Wehrmacht in 1944 to store V1 flying bombs and bombed by the RAF in July of that year.
