Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south or east with no offshore dangers in the final mile. Holding on sand. The bay is exposed to the east and south, and lies open to the mistral funnelling down the Rhône delta from the north-west. Nearest shelter is Port Gardian 1.2 NM west.
Practical
No services at the anchorage. Water, fuel and provisions at Port Gardian in the town. Dinghy landing on the beach subject to swell.
Ashore
The town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer sits behind the sea wall, with the fortified church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer at 700 m, known for the annual Romani pilgrimage on 24 and 25 May. Camargue Regional Nature Park starts at the edge of town, with flamingo lagoons and the Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gau 4 km north on the D570.
