Open roadstead off the Camargue coast, west of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, sand bottom on the foreshore of the Etang d'Icard lagoon system.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from seaward across shallow banks; soundings shoal gradually and the bottom is clean sand. No buoyage off the beach. Open to the south and south-east, which dominate in Mediterranean low-pressure conditions; shelter from N, NE, E, W and NW. The mistral builds steep seas from the north-west despite the offshore fetch.
Practical
No services at anchor. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer harbour lies 1 nm NE with water, fuel, and the capitainerie on VHF 9. Port Gardian, 2.2 nm east, is the municipal marina with visitor berths and provisioning in the village.
Ashore
The Parc naturel regional de Camargue borders the whole coast, with the Etang du Vaccares and its flamingo colonies inland. The fortified church of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, built from the 12th century, stands about 1 nm away and hosts the Roma pilgrimage each 24 May.
