Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Atlantic side of the Lower Keys in settled weather. The anchorage gives shelter from N through E winds but lies open to the south. Depths are shoal around the island, so sound your way in and allow for the algae bottom, which can give uncertain holding.
Practical
No facilities on the island. Straight Line Marine and Cudjoe Gardens Marina both lie 3.2 nm to the north-west for fuel and provisions.
History
Key Lois held a rhesus monkey breeding colony run by Charles River Laboratories from 1973. The free-ranging animals stripped the protected red mangrove and the operation was ordered to close in 1998. The island has been left uninhabited since.
