Guide
Approach and anchoring
From Hawk Channel, head for Newfound Harbor Keys Anchorage 16 nm west of Sombrero Key Light, in 19 to 22 feet in the outer channel. Inside Newfound Harbor, deeper-draught boats anchor in the cross-bar of the H-shaped channel in 7 to 8 feet at low water; shoal-draught boats use the 5 to 6 foot zones east of the main channel. Anchoring is prohibited in Pine Channel.
Practical
No fuel berth or services in the anchorage itself. Straight Line Marine and Cudjoe Gardens Marina lie 2.9 nm west for diesel and supplies. Big Pine Key Boat Rentals operates from the fishing lodge marina at Mile Marker 33 and from Summerland Key at Mile Marker 24.5.
Ashore
Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, a barrier reef snorkel and dive site, lies a short hop south by tender or small boat. The mangrove backcountry north of Big Pine offers shallow-water fishing on flats boats and kayaks.
