Approach and anchoring

Approach from the east, staying well off the Basse du Rénier and the rocks extending from Pointe de Saire. The Tatihou fortifications and the Île de Tatihou lighthouse serve as useful marks. Strong tidal streams run along this coast, so plan the approach on a fair tide. No lit buoyage on the mooring itself.

Practical

Anchor on sand in 3 to 5 metres at low water. Holding is good on sand. No services on site. Dinghy ashore to the slipway at La Hougue, with shops and restaurants in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue 1.5 nautical miles to the SW.

Ashore

Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue village within walking distance of the slipway, oyster beds along the shore, and the Vauban towers of Tatihou and La Hougue inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008.

History

The Tatihou and La Hougue towers were built by Vauban after the 1692 Battle of La Hougue, in which the French fleet was destroyed by the Anglo-Dutch fleet. Both towers were added to the UNESCO list of Vauban fortifications in 2008.
