Isle De Jean Charles Marina
- Type
- Harbour
Small marina on Island Road serving Isle de Jean Charles, a shrinking ridge of land in the Terrebonne Parish marsh near Montegut, Louisiana.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached by road along Island Road, a low causeway built in 1953 that floods in high winds, spring tides or storm surge. By water, the marina opens onto the surrounding marsh channels and Bayou Terrebonne. Check conditions before relying on road access.
Practical
Boat launch ramp and direct water access. A basic working marina rather than an equipped harbour, used by local anglers heading into the marsh.
History
Isle de Jean Charles is the historic homeland of the Isle de Jean Charles Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw. The island has lost about 98 percent of its land since 1955 to erosion and sea level rise. In 2016 Louisiana received 48.3 million dollars in federal funds to resettle residents inland, one of the first state-led climate relocations in the United States.
