Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the west through the archipelago's lagoon. Unmarked rocks off the north and south tips of Penfret. Holding good in sand in 3 to 6 metres. Untenable in W to NW winds, in which case shift to the east side of the island.
Ashore
Penfret is home to the Centre Nautique des Glénan, France's largest sailing school, founded in 1947. Lighthouse at the north end of the island, built in 1838, active and not open to visitors. No shops, no water on the island.
History
The Glénan archipelago has been a sailing school since 1947 when Philippe Viannay and Hélène Mordacq founded Les Glénans as a means of rehabilitation after the war. The school trained over 400,000 sailors by its 70th anniversary.
