Approach and anchoring

Sheltered from N, NW, W and SW, open to the east. Tidal streams reach 3 to 4 knots between the islands at springs. The Chenal du Ferlas and the Chenal de la Trieux are the two main approaches, both well buoyed but requiring attention to the numerous drying rocks. Drop in 5 to 8 metres on sand. The Phare du Paon, the granite lighthouse at the north tip, is a useful landmark.

Practical

The main anchorage and visitor moorings at La Corderie and Port-Clos are 0.5 NM SW. Water tap at Port-Clos, no fuel on the island. Village shops at Le Bourg 600 m from Port-Clos with bakery, grocery and post office.

Ashore

The island is car-free, 3.5 km long, covered walking trails connect the north and south. Phare du Paon at the northern tip, rebuilt in 1949 after wartime destruction, sits on pink granite cliffs. Chapelle Saint-Michel on the highest point at 33 metres gives a wide view over the archipelago.

History

Bréhat was declared a botanical reserve in 1907 for its microclimate, which allows mimosas, agapanthus and fig trees to grow outdoors year round at this latitude. The archipelago became a protected site in 1907, one of the first in France.
