Approach and anchoring

Upriver from the Gironde estuary, about 20 NM from Bec d'Ambès. Approach only with the flood tide; the Dordogne runs strong on the ebb. Tidal bore documented on spring tides, around 1 hour before high water at Libourne. Berths lie along the town quay on the left bank. Shelter from N, E, SE, S and NW.

Practical

Pontoon with water and electricity. Asque river halt lies 7,3 NM to the W, Port de Cavernes 8,1 NM to the W as downstream alternatives. Town centre shops 200 m from the pontoon.

Ashore

Libourne bastide founded in 1270, with its central Place Abel Surchamp and covered market. Saint-Émilion AOC vineyards start 8 km east; Pomerol vineyards border the town to the north.

History

Libourne was founded as an English bastide in 1270 by Roger de Leybourne, lieutenant of King Edward I. The town shipped wine from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol to Bristol and London throughout the Middle Ages.
