Approach and anchoring
Navigation on the Rhône between the Vaugris lock upstream and the Sablons lock downstream. Keep well clear of the commercial fairway, barge traffic is heavy on this stretch. Current runs downstream year-round, stronger after spring snowmelt. Pontoon is on the left side heading downstream.
Practical
Free public pontoon with a few places for visiting boats, no staff on site. Water point on the quay, no electricity, no fuel. Bakery, butcher and small grocery in the village of Ampuis within 400 m. Bus line 135 to Vienne and Lyon stops on the RD386 at 300 m.
Ashore
Côte-Rôtie vineyard terraces climb the granite slope directly behind the village, several domaines offer tastings by appointment within 500 m, including Guigal and Jamet. Condrieu and its Viognier vineyards at 4 km south by the Via Rhôna cycle path. Vienne Roman theatre and temple of Augustus at 10 km north.
History
Ampuis has grown wine since Roman times, Pliny the Elder mentions its steep terraces in the 1st century. The Côte-Rôtie AOC was recognised in 1940 and covers about 320 hectares across Ampuis, Tupin-et-Semons and Saint-Cyr-sur-le-Rhône.
