Small harbour at the mouth of the Fango river on the west coast of Corsica, gateway to the Scandola nature reserve.

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the west into the Golfe de Galéria, bearing on the Tour de Galéria, a 16th-century Genoese watchtower on the south headland. The bay opens widely and offers good shelter from E and SE winds but is exposed to W and NW swells. Moorings on buoys off the beach and a short quay at the north end of the village. Keep clear of the Fango delta shoals on the north side of the bay.

Practical

Around 30 visitor moorings laid by the commune in summer. Water and basic services at the quay. Small grocery, bakery, tabac and two or three restaurants in the village at 150 m. Diesel available by jerrican only, nearest fuel berth at Calvi 18 nautical miles north.

Ashore

The Reserve naturelle de Scandola, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1983, starts 3 nautical miles south around Punta Palazzu. Fango valley, classified as a UNESCO biosphere reserve, runs inland from the port and is crossed by a marked path to the Tuarelli holm oak forest 8 km east. Beach at the river mouth, 300 m north of the quay.

History

The Tour de Galéria was built by the Republic of Genoa in the 1550s as part of the coastal watchtower network against Barbary raiders. The village itself grew slowly in the 19th century once malaria was pushed back from the Fango marshes.
