Approach and anchoring
Approach by the Sarthe, navigable class F. Lock of Fille immediately upstream, manually operated in low season, automatic in summer. Speed limit of 6 km/h in the port reach. Watch for fishermen on the banks.
Practical
Pontoon with water and electricity. Pump-out. Slipway. Restaurant at the lock. No fuel on site, nearest station at Arnage 3 km north-east. Houseboat hire base at the quay in season.
Ashore
Parc de la Beunerie along the river, walking paths and picnic tables 200 m from the port. Eglise Saint-Germain of Fille, eleventh century, in the village at 300 m. Voie verte cycle path Le Mans to Angers runs along the old towpath next to the port. Abbey of Epau, Cistercian foundation of 1229, at 6 km by road to the north.
History
The Sarthe lock at Fille was rebuilt in 1840 under the Becquey programme to the standard gauge of 30 metres by 5.2 metres, allowing passage of flat-bottomed gabarres carrying grain and slate between Le Mans and the Loire via Angers.
