Approach and anchoring
Quai Louis Blanc, on the right bank of the Sarthe, downstream of the Pont Yssoir. The Sarthe is canalised and navigable from Le Mans to Angers via a chain of locks. Moderate current, shallow spots to watch after summer low water.
Practical
Seven secure pontoons, drinking water, shore power, free sanitary block with showers, wifi free for the first two nights, waste pump-out, slipway. Port managed by the Ville du Mans. City centre, shops and railway station within 10 minutes on foot. Tramway stop Éperon 400 m from the port.
Ashore
Cité Plantagenêt and its cobbled medieval streets lined with half-timbered houses start directly above the port on the hill. Cathédrale Saint-Julien, 64 m bell tower, 600 m uphill. Arche de la Nature, a 500-hectare protected area with farm, beekeeping and forest trails, 6 km east via the banks of the Sarthe.
History
Le Mans was the seat of Geoffrey Plantagenet, count of Anjou and Maine, who married Matilda in the Cathédrale Saint-Julien on 17 June 1128. Their son, born in Le Mans in 1133, became Henry II of England. The modern leisure port opened in 1975.
