Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south. Weed bottom, tricky to set, relay the anchor until it bites on a clear patch. Shelter from N, W and NW. Open to S and SE. Port du Frioul 0.8 NM NE on the channel between Pomègues and Ratonneau.

Practical

No services on site. Port du Frioul at 0.8 NM NE has water, electricity, diesel, showers and a small shop, plus ferry link to Marseille Vieux-Port roughly every hour in summer.

Ashore

Coastal paths across Pomègues and Ratonneau islands, part of the Parc national des Calanques since 2012. Hôpital Caroline ruin on Ratonneau, built in 1821 as a quarantine hospital for yellow fever.

History

The Frioul archipelago was used as a quarantine station from the 17th century. Château d'If on the adjacent island is the prison made famous by Alexandre Dumas in Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, published in 1844.
