Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south. Pick up flashing green buoy 1 off the west end of Dana Point, then steer for flashing red buoy 2 at the harbour mouth or flashing green 3 marking the south breakwater. Depths inside the harbour run 9 to 15 feet. Harbour Patrol monitors VHF channel 16.
Practical
Transient berths for vessels from 20 to 200 feet, currently relocated to the outer basin during the long phased rebuild started in 2021. Shore power, fresh water, heads and showers. Marina office on +1 949 496 6137. Fuel berth at the harbour entrance, separate operator.
Ashore
Doheny State Beach 600 metres east of the harbour. Ocean Institute and the Dana Point headland trail at the west end of the basin. Restaurants and chandlery along Dana Point Harbor Drive.
History
Richard Henry Dana Jr. landed here in 1835 aboard the brig Pilgrim to load cattle hides and described the bluff in Two Years Before the Mast as the only romantic spot in California. The town and harbour were named after him in 1884.
