River halt on the Yonne in the walled town of Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, between Sens and Joigny in Burgundy.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached via the Yonne, a class I waterway feeding into the Seine. Moorings on both banks of the river: quai Bretoche on the right bank and the pontoons on the left bank. Depth is suitable for standard penichettes and cruisers. No lock at Villeneuve itself; the Rosoy and Villevallier locks frame the reach.
Practical
Three water and electricity terminals on the left bank serve up to twelve boats. Night mooring 10.50 euros with electricity at 5.25 euros per 12 hours, payment by card at the terminal. Daytime mooring is free. Shops, bakery and the Thursday morning market are within 300 m.
Ashore
The medieval town is walled. Porte de Sens and Porte de Joigny, both built around 1200 on orders of Philippe Auguste, stand at each end of the Grande Rue, 150 m and 400 m from the mooring. The cylindrical keep dating from 1205 to 1211 is 250 m east of the quay. Musée de la Porte de Joigny covers the town's royal foundation in 1163.
History
Villeneuve-le-Roi was founded in 1163 by Louis VII as a new royal town on the march between Champagne and Burgundy. Philippe Auguste fortified it around 1200 with a stone enceinte, two monumental gates and a cylindrical keep. The Yonne carried flotted wood from the Morvan to Paris for four centuries.
