Approach and anchoring
Reached by the Yonne navigation, lock of Saint-Bond just downstream. Low clearance under the town bridges, check air draught before transiting. Current can be strong after rainfall in winter and spring.
Practical
Pontoon for visiting boats with water and electricity. Capitainerie service seasonal. Town centre shops and supermarket within 500 m walking distance. Fuel by jerrycan from service stations in town.
Ashore
Cathedral of Saint-Etienne at 400 m, one of the earliest Gothic cathedrals in France, begun around 1135. Municipal museum in the former archbishops' palace, adjoining the cathedral, houses the Sens treasury with liturgical textiles. Covered market Halles Jean Jaures, built 1882, open Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, 350 m from the pontoon.
History
Sens was the seat of an important medieval archbishopric whose province included Paris until 1622. Thomas Becket spent part of his exile here between 1164 and 1166 before returning to Canterbury.
