- Harbour
River port on the Yonne at Joigny, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, on the navigable route between the Seine and the Canal de Bourgogne.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter from the Yonne by the left bank, downstream of the road bridge. The river is navigable for pleasure craft between Auxerre and Montereau. Beware of current after heavy rain. Limited air draught under the bridges of the Yonne, check before passing upstream.
Practical
Quay with water and electricity, capitainerie open in season. Town centre a few minutes on foot from the quay. Supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants and SNCF station on the Paris-Bercy line within walking distance.
Ashore
Old town on the slope above the Yonne with timber-framed houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, Maison du Pilori and Maison de l'Arbre de Jessé among the documented ones. Église Saint-Jean and Église Saint-Thibault are both listed monuments historiques. Vineyards of the Côte Saint-Jacques rise directly behind the town.
History
Joigny was the seat of a county from the 10th century. The old town burned in 1530 and was rebuilt, which explains the concentration of 16th-century timber frames in the upper streets. The town was the birthplace of Marcel Aymé in 1902.
Story
The Côte Saint-Jacques behind the town is classified AOC Bourgogne Côte Saint-Jacques, one of the smallest appellations in Burgundy, with about 40 hectares of vines.
