Approach and anchoring

Approach on the canalised Seine between the Vives-Eaux lock downstream at Dammarie-les-Lys and the Champagne lock upstream. Maximum draught 2 m at the pontoons. VNF VHF channel 22 for lock traffic. Priority to commercial freight on this reach.

Practical

Pontoons with water and electricity on the left bank. Bakery and grocery in the village at 400 m. Bar-restaurant at the port. Gare de Chartrettes on the Paris Gare de Lyon to Montereau line at 500 m with regular trains to Paris in 45 minutes.

Ashore

Forest of Fontainebleau begins on the right bank, reached by the bridge 1 km downstream, with the sandstone bouldering sites of Rocher Cassepot at 4 km and the Gorges d'Apremont at 7 km. Chateau de Fontainebleau, UNESCO World Heritage since 1981, at 9 km by road. Footpath GR 2 follows the Seine through the village.

History

Chartrettes developed as a Seine crossing and fishing village. The stone quay dates from the 19th century expansion of commercial barge traffic between Paris and Burgundy. The current suspension bridge replaced an earlier one destroyed in 1944.

Story

The Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley lived a few kilometres upstream at Moret-sur-Loing and painted the Seine and its barges around Chartrettes during the 1880s.
