Approach and anchoring
Enter the Great Salt Pond through the dredged New Harbor channel on the western side of Block Island. Channel depth is around 9 metres at low water, suited to deep-draught yachts. VHF channel 11.
Practical
Over 1,400 metres of dock space across 150 berths, accommodating yachts up to 75 metres LOA. Diesel and petrol on the fuel berth, fresh water and shore power on the pontoons. Three dockside restaurants, swimming pool, hotel rooms and live music in season.
Ashore
New Harbor village and bicycle hire at 500 m from the docks. Mohegan Bluffs cliffs at the south end of the island, at 5 km via the Mohegan Trail. Block Island North Light, at the northern tip, reachable on foot via Settlers Rock at 4 km.
History
Block Island was settled in 1661 by sixteen English families and incorporated as New Shoreham in 1672. The Great Salt Pond was opened to the sea by a permanent cut in 1895, transforming the pond into a deep-water harbour.
