Anchorage inside the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge at Narragansett, Rhode Island, at the south-western tip of Narragansett Bay, on sand and mud.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The harbour is enclosed by three breakwaters, entered through the East Gap of about 1,200 feet or the West Gap of about 1,500 feet. The main stone breakwater runs 6,970 feet long. Holding is reported as poor, especially in fresh winds, so set the anchor with care.
Practical
Point Judith Marina and Gooseberry Marina both lie 1.7 miles north, up the Point Judith Pond inlet.
History
The breakwaters were built between 1891 and 1914 to create a harbour of refuge for vessels caught out in Block Island Sound. The central breakwater was completed in 1898, and work on the harbour walls finished in 1950.
