Anchorage off Capers Island, an undeveloped barrier island north of Isle of Palms in South Carolina, on a sand bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Capers Island has no road access and is reached only by boat, off the Intracoastal Waterway near marker 99. Capers Inlet from the sea carries about 1.5 ft over the bar with breakers across the entrance, so the inlet is best avoided and the island approached from the ICW. The anchorage is sheltered from N through E and exposed to the southern quarter. A small dock and boardwalk lead ashore.
Practical
There are no facilities on the island. Camping requires a permit from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, which manages the site. Carry all water and provisions aboard.
Ashore
The island, a South Carolina state heritage site, has no buildings or electricity, only trails, maritime forest and tidal creeks. The McCaskill Trail crosses the island to a beach lined with weathered tree trunks. Bottlenose dolphins, bald eagles and wading birds are common. The nearest fuel and supplies are at Isle of Palms Marina, 6.1 nm to the south-west.
