Approach and anchoring

Approach from the east. Entrance between the Dragon jetty to the north and the Saint-Nicolas jetty, marked by red and green lights. Maximum draught 3.8 m. Surge can build inside the basin with strong easterlies. Avoid the commercial ferry lane 700 m north of the entrance. VHF 9.

Practical

263 berths, visitor pontoon on the north side. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Showers and laundry. Restaurants and cafes ring the basin. Supermarket and full shopping district within 400 m.

Ashore

The Terra Nova citadel, built by the Genoese from 1380, overlooks the port from the south headland and houses the Musee de Bastia in the former governors' palace. Place Saint-Nicolas, the largest square in Corsica at 300 m long, is 200 m north of the port.

History

The harbour was the seat of Genoese rule over Corsica from the 14th to the 18th century, replacing Biguglia as administrative capital. Pasquale Paoli declared Corsican independence here in 1755, and the city was briefly the island's capital again under British protection in 1794.
