Guide
Approach and anchoring
Accessible by the navigable Rhone between the Gervans lock upstream and the Bourg-les-Valence lock downstream. Strong current after rain, stay clear of the main channel used by commercial barges and hotel-barge traffic. The inner face of the pontoon is shallow, sounded at about 1.3 to 1.5 m, so deeper boats lie on the outside where there is more water; wash from passing barges rolls the berths through the night. Limited pontoon with about four berths, maximum draught around 2 m.
Practical
Short stopover mainly, with only about four berths that are often taken by permanent liveaboards. The harbour office is at the police station. Water and power are on the outer pontoons only, none on the inner face. The pontoon gate has a code given on payment, about 23 euros a night for a boat of about 12 metres. Town centre and shops within a 5-minute walk. La Roche-de-Glun port is 3.3 NM downstream for a longer stay with more services.
Ashore
Chateau de Tournon, a 14th and 16th century fortress above the river, houses the town museum 300 m from the pontoon, open 14:00 to 18:00 with entry about 4 euros. The Marc Seguin pedestrian suspension bridge, built in 1825 and rebuilt in 1847, crosses to Tain-l'Hermitage, where restaurants line the far bank. Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage vineyards rise on the opposite bank.
History
Tournon was a Rhône crossing point from Roman times. Marc Seguin built one of the first cable suspension bridges in continental Europe here in 1825.
