Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the north through the Passage de la Teignouse or from the west. Entrance to the ria marked by a red and white lighthouse on the pointe du Cardinal. Strong tidal streams at the entrance at springs. The inner harbour dries at low water, so yachts take the outer moorings or anchor off the town; boats that can take the ground beach at the head of the harbour on good sand, the most sheltered berth of all. Do not go right to the bottom, where mud over hard rock and a mother chain foul anchors, nor too far to port past the buoys where a shoal rises. Avoid the entrance buoys near the rocks in N to E winds, when swell works in.
Practical
Visitor moorings and beaching are handled by the harbour office, around 12 euros a night, with a shower about 2 euros per person on top; the showers are paid, with restricted hours, and a charge applies even at anchor. A small mini-market by the quay is limited in stock, and there is bike rental by the port. Water at the quay. Fuel and full services at Le Palais, 3.1 nm south-east. Shops, bakery and restaurants along the quay and rue Saint-Nicolas.
Ashore
Coastal path GR340 along the Côte Sauvage, with the Pointe des Poulains and the former home of actress Sarah Bernhardt at 4 km by foot. Grotte de l'Apothicairerie cliffs at 5 km. The village was painted by Claude Monet in 1886 during his stay on Belle-Île. On the quay are the restaurant Le Cardinal, Chez Carole near the harbour office and a rhumerie by the old port, with Nul Bar After for burgers and cocktails. Oysters and cockles can be gathered at low water.
History
Sauzon was a sardine fishing port from the 19th century; the last cannery closed in 1970. The lighthouse at the harbour entrance was built in 1862.
