Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the NW, between the Pointe des Poulains and Sauzon. Rock and sand bottom with algae, holding variable, and a chain on the bottom can foul the anchor. The usual method is to drop well forward toward the far rock face and run a stern line ashore; only one or two old sealed rings remain, with a blue line and chain round a rock on the south-east side preferred for the stern. Shelter is good in E and NE, but a strong SW or W wind funnels down the inlet in a venturi and boats sail about, some having dragged onto the rocks, so leave if the wind backs into that quarter or to the N. The cove fills early. No lighting, avoid at night.
Practical
Forain anchorage with no facilities. Sauzon 1.4 NM E for moorings, water and provisions. Le Palais 4.4 NM E for full services, ferry and chandlery.
Ashore
Sentier côtier GR 340 runs along the cliffs above the inlet, linking Pointe des Poulains 1 km NW to Sauzon 2 km SE on foot. Phare des Poulains and the former home of Sarah Bernhardt 1.2 km NW. Plage de Donnant on the Atlantic side 3 km S.
History
Belle-Île was fortified by Vauban in the late 17th century and changed hands between France and Britain during the Seven Years' War, occupied by the British from 1761 to 1763.
