Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Baie de Sauzon, keeping clear of the rocks off the Pointe du Cardinal to the west. The bay dries in places near the shore, so watch the sounder. The buoys fill the western side of the entrance; when they are full, anchor on sand on the eastern side, which holds well. Sheltered from the wind but open to any N or NW swell, which sets the boat rolling and snubbing on the buoy. VHF 9 for the Sauzon harbour master.
Practical
22 buoys on sand, costing roughly 21 to 37 euros a night by boat length, plus a small charge per crew member; showers are not included. Roadstead service runs about 9.30 to 21.30 in summer. No other facilities on site, but the fishing port of Sauzon lies 0.3 nm south with water, fuel, shops and restaurants. Port du Palais is 3.1 nm SE for a larger refuge.
Ashore
Land the dinghy at the pontoon past the second green beacon rather than the jetty reserved for the passenger boat. Sauzon village at 0.3 nm has painted houses along the ria, with a bakery and grocery within 300 m of the quay. The GR340 coastal path leads to the Pointe des Poulains lighthouse at about 3 km, former residence of Sarah Bernhardt.
Story
Sauzon ria was the main fishing shelter for sardine boats in the 19th century before Belle-Île switched to tuna and then to tourism.
