Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach through the Bay of Quiberon to Houat, the outer anchorage lying off the small harbour of Port Saint-Gildas on the north side of the island. Pick up one of the chests, which sit close together about a hundred metres off the beach, or anchor on sand nearby. The chests carry no pendant, so pass a warp from the boat through the ring and watch for chafe. VHF 9. Exposed to any northerly component, and it rolls with the wash of early fishing boats and the fast shuttles, so move inside the harbour in bad weather.
Practical
About 17 chests and anchoring spots, laid from mid-May, heavy boats accepted. A shuttle service run by the harbourmaster links the chests to the shore in season, in some years included in the mooring fee, otherwise part of a night charge of around 20 euros with no shower and rubbish to be taken away. The last shuttle is around 1830, too early for dinner ashore. Berthing and services are in Port Saint-Gildas itself; La Trinité-sur-Mer and Le Crouesty on the mainland lie across the bay.
Ashore
Landing is easiest at the harbour of Port Saint-Gildas. The beach can be awkward to reach by dinghy at high water, when breakers form along it, so the harbour is the safer landing then. The island fills with day boats at the height of the season and empties out of it.
