Approach and anchoring

Approach from the open Atlantic south of the island. The south coast of Groix is a line of cliffs cut by narrow inlets, with outlying rocks. Navigate by chart and keep well offshore until the cove is identified. The bottom is rock and weed with clear patches of sand; a rocky head covers about mid-tide close inshore, so stand off until a spot can be picked out.

Practical

Anchor in 4 to 6 metres at low water, finding one of the sand patches among the rock and weed, where holding is good. It works overnight in settled N to NE winds, though it needs plenty of chain on big coefficients and a residual NW swell can still work in. Exposed to S and SW Atlantic swell: in those conditions move to Port de Saint-Gildas on the north coast, 1.1 nm E, or round to Port-Tudy.

Ashore

Landing by tender in calm weather, with a beach close by and the nearest village about 25 minutes on foot. The GR 34 coastal path runs along the clifftops above. The area belongs to the Réserve naturelle François Le Bail, which protects the geology of Groix; the mineralogical site of Pen Men is further west.
