Anchorage on the west side of the Île-aux-Moines approach, Gulf of Morbihan, Brittany. Sand and rock bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the main gulf channel. Strong tidal streams run through the Gulf of Morbihan, up to 8 knots at springs in the narrows off Port-Blanc, so time the approach for slack water. The bottom is sand towards the beach end, with weed and rock at the deeper western end, so drop nearer the beach and check the hold. A westerly swell works in and the anchorage rolls even when the wind is in a sheltered sector.
Practical
Forain anchorage without services, and it fills early on summer evenings with little room left to anchor. Port de Saint-Gildas lies 1.3 NM east if shelter is needed. Port de l'Argol sits 5.5 NM to the south-east.
Story
Shelter is from north-west through north to north-east. The mooring is exposed to southerly winds common on frontal passages.
