Approach and anchoring

Open roadstead approached from the east. Anchor just outside the line of yellow buoys by the red and white marker tower, on the south side of the long sea wall, in 4 to 5 m on sand with excellent holding. The breakwater gives strong shelter in N and NW winds, including the tramontane, but little once the wind backs W or WNW and blows off the beach. The sea walls have been extended, so charts may be out of date. Fully exposed to S and E swell.

Practical

No facilities at the anchorage. To take the dinghy up the channel, call the harbour office on VHF 12 and land past the pilot-boat pontoon on the port side; a 5-knot limit is enforced and the harbourmaster halts traffic when a ship is berthing. Port-la-Nouvelle commercial and fishing harbour is 1.3 NM to the NW with fuel, water and shops. The Robine canal quay lies 1.5 NM to the NW.

Ashore

Long sand beach accessible by dinghy, with shops, a good bakery and a butcher in the town behind it. The beach is backed by the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée regional natural park, and the Étang de Bages-Sigean lagoon, a Ramsar wetland known for flamingos, starts 2 km inland.
