Mixed commercial and leisure harbour of 334 berths on the Aude coast in Occitanie, at the sea end of the Canal de la Robine linking Narbonne to the Mediterranean.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east, entry between two long jetties with sectored lights. A deep-water channel for commercial shipping runs a strong current, and the entrance can be choppy with an easterly swell. Tugs lie across the channel and, like the fishing boats, come and go through the night, their wash reaching the berths. Strong tramontane from the north-west funnels down the channel. Maximum draught 4,5 m. VHF 9.
Practical
334 berths managed by the Régie du Port. Fuel berth on the leisure pontoons, water, electricity, WC and notably good hot showers, with a free washing machine in the toilet block. Berths are cheap for the coast, roughly 17 to 28 euros a night by size. Shops, a bakery and supermarket in the town 400 m off, plus a hardware store that carries a little boat gear. Visitor berths are few and the office is not always staffed, closed at weekends out of season, so call ahead.
Ashore
Plage Nord runs 4 km north of the entrance jetty, backed by dunes. The Hôtel du Port restaurant sits at the end of the pontoons, and the town has good seafood and cheap oysters. Réserve naturelle de Sainte-Lucie, a protected island of 825 hectares, lies 2 km west across the Robine channel with signed walking trails. Narbonne and its 13th century Cathédrale Saint-Just are a 25 minute train ride from a station 10 minutes from the port, or reached by boat up the Canal de la Robine.
History
The harbour was opened in 1820 as the seaward terminus of the Canal de la Robine, itself a branch of the Canal du Midi built by Vauban in the 1680s to connect Narbonne to the sea.
