Tidal harbour of 110 berths on the Penerf river estuary in southern Morbihan, Brittany, serving the village of Damgan.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Entrance from the Mor Braz between Pointe de Penvins and Pointe du Bile, marked by the Borenis and Pignon lateral buoys. The marked channel bends in an S, narrow in places, with shifting sandbanks and a strong current around mid-tide, so time the entry for slack water. VHF 9 for the harbourmaster. The offshore pontoon lies along the current and is easy to come alongside, the shore pontoon lies across it, best taken at slack. A westerly wind against the tide kicks up a chop. Max draught 6 m at the outer berths, less inside the river.

Practical

About ten visitor berths, six on an offshore pontoon not connected to the shore, plus a few buoys. No water or electricity at these berths, which makes the 31 to 39 euro rate feel steep. Diesel and a boatyard with travel-lift on site. New, clean showers ashore, harbour service until about 2100 in season, mooring assistance by zodiac on VHF 9. No shop or bakery at the port, the office lends bicycles for Damgan 4 km away, and oyster farmers sell plates of oysters on the spot.

Ashore

Oyster tasting sheds along the quays of Le Tour-du-Parc and Penerf, the estuary is a recognised oyster production area. Sentier du littoral GR 34 runs along the shore towards Pointe de Penvins at 2 km and Damgan beach at 3 km. Refuge in Anse Dibenn just 0.5 NM SW for a lunch stop. A crêperie, a slightly smarter restaurant and a bar serve the village.

History

Penerf was a fortified anchorage from the 16th century and served as a supply base for the Ponant royal fleet. The stone quays and former salt warehouses on the west bank date from the 18th century.
