Small fishing harbour on the east coast of Cap Corse, 4 nm north of Bastia.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east by day only. The entrance lies between the ruined Genoese tower and a low rocky shelf to the north. Draught is limited to 0.9 m at the quay, so deeper-draught yachts anchor outside on sand, either about half a mile north of the harbour or just off one side of the entrance, where holding is good and there is shelter from a NW or W mistral. The quay itself is exposed to easterly winds and untenable in a libeccio swell wrapping round the cape.
Practical
A dozen local berths, mostly taken by fishing boats, so the harbour serves mainly to land a tender. No fuel on the quay, though a fountain by the harbour gives fresh water. Bakery, a well-stocked Spar, a pharmacy and several restaurants in the village behind the harbour. Port Toga and the Vieux Port of Bastia lie 4 to 4.9 nm south as refuge.
Ashore
Ruined Genoese tower on the headland next to the port, built in the 16th century against Barbary raids. The waterfront restaurant Le Pirate sits by the little harbour. Coastal path north towards Sisco and south towards Miomo. Paul Valery spent summers here and is commemorated in the village.
History
Erbalunga was one of the fortified marine villages of Cap Corse, tied to Genoese rule from the 14th century until the 18th. The tower that frames the port was part of the coastal watch network against Saracen and Barbary incursions.
