Fishing and yachting port on the Côte de Penthièvre in Brittany, sheltered by the red sandstone headland of Cap d'Erquy.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the N, leaving the rocks off Cap d'Erquy well clear. The port dries: visitors moor on green buoys marked with a V, three off the entrance to the new port and three off the old port, all in good condition. They dry at low water and boats take the ground on sand, so allow for the large tidal range. Maximum draught 2.2 m. Hanging buoys with fenders lie along the old pier to keep boats off the wall. VHF 9. Port du Piégu lies 3.8 NM SW and Les Hôpitaux 2.5 NM E.
Practical
Capitainerie on site with water and electricity, though the phone is not always answered. Berthing is inexpensive, around 12 euros for a 12 metre boat. Shops, bakery and restaurants around the port. Rail link via Lamballe.
Ashore
Coastal path GR 34 climbs onto Cap d'Erquy and its heathland, a protected Grand Site de France, a 1 km walk from the port. Plage de Caroual to the S and Plage du Guen within the cape are reached on foot in 20 to 40 minutes.
History
Erquy is the main landing port in France for the coquille Saint-Jacques, the scallop dredging season running from October to mid-May under strict quotas.
